Whether opening from the foot end or the side its an easy and accessible way to store away your winter clothes in the summer (although in the UK do we really get a summer?), bed linen, the kids toys or any unwanted clutter around the house.

The Sofa Bed that becomes the guardian angel of all homes when Aunty Muriel is coming over for that visit she does once a year just to see if your cooking has become any better and to check that you’ve been practicing the recipes she left you (that you now have no idea where you put) or the kids are having a sleep over and 3 little monsters need a place to put down their sleepy heads but you have no spare room!

And now one of my personal favourites… ‘The Day Bed’. This little beauty can like the Sofa bed be used day or night. Daily it poses as an elegant frame supporting a delicate mattress and in many homes a great deal of cushions and throws to pose as a lovely seat for two within the home yet nightly it turns into a bed without the hassle of pulling any heavy wood or sliding bed but by simply moving the pillows from the center back to one of the sides!

In todays current climate buying a house with ample amounts of space is a lovely idea but thats generally all it is ‘an idea.’ what we are usually loaded with on the reserve is a cute home were by space is a premium and many therefore do not have the room to have both a sofa and a bed (especially in studio apartments) and therefore a day bed becomes the oracle of help!

Many people chose to have a Day Bed in their conservatory, hallway, guest room, large kitchens or in a small studio as explained before making a space hinderance into a beautiful bed bliss.

Whether you want to feel as though you are sleeping on a pile of pillows or a hard floor deferentiating the mattress tension is vitally important to your nights sleep but be aware that what is soft to one person maybe firm or medium to another. Some people like firm mattresses others like soft mattresses, so which is right and which is wrong? It is all a matter of the individuals opinion.

One thing is for certain, investing in the best quality mattress that you can afford is crucial as you will be spending one third of your life on it! This is assuming the average person sleeps around 7-8 hours per day, it is calculated we sleep for around 1 third of our life time, therefore making our choice paramount.

I find choosing a candy bar in the store hard enough with all the choice but the candy bar will be eaten and disappear with in and probably under a minute my mattress however I’m hoping will last a great deal longer than that! Forget Note to Self, Note to you…Go buy yourself an Ottoman Bed and be a happy bunny with all the extra space you have created hiding all your extra bits and bobs!

But forgetting the decorative side for the minute the children’s beds of today are so well designed that they are compact (because as adults we have obviously taken the bigger room!) and have built in wardrobes, desks, drawers and even sofa beds for the little rascals friends.

The sofa bed was invented to help everybody in all sorts of situations out! The situations themselves are endless but the solution is simple…Pull the bottom of that sofa that you’ve been sitting on watching Coronation Street and turn it into a bed, throw some sheets and pillows on it and viola, a bed has been born.

Sofa beds are perfect for those rooms that don’t have enough space to have a full sized bed in all of the time, studio apartments, or extra sleeping equipment that doubles up into a sofa for those bigger rooms that we all wish we had.

Ranging from a simple piece of foam to a sofa that looks hand crafted in the Rocky Juniper mountains these little beauties have a secret…They are also a bed!

There are now many colours and styles to choose from yet they all hide the same secret, you can not only sit on them but you can climb into them and get your 8 hours of sleep a day, only to hide the evidence in the morning by folding it very simply away.

Let’s look at the Innerspring mattress first as most people find them comfortable and affordable.  They are the most popular because of the various styles and sizes that are available.  Some things to consider when looking at innerspring mattresses are that they need to be replaced about every eight to ten years.  They don’t hold body heat and they can disturb a light sleeper with the motion of another person turning over.   The pillow-top on mattresses have been shown to wear out before the actual mattress, so although they are quite popular it is something to think about.  Innerspring mattresses will come in a variety of firmnesses. Some even have one side of larger mattresses with a soft and a firm side.  When you are testing a mattress lie down on it in various positions for at least ten minutes to see how it really feels.

Memory Foam mattresses are made differently from Innersprings.  A Memory Foam can have from one to six inches of foam that is then glued onto a very thick polyurethane base.  There are several price ranges for this type of mattress, but they generally cost more than an Innerspring.  Most people who own a Memory Foam bed are happy with them, however, a small percent report that they are too hard, too hot and difficult to move on.

Latex Foam is popular in the UK because it has many of the same qualities of the memory foam, but with a nice difference.  Latex has a bit more spring to it so it won’t retain body heat like memory foam.  This makes it much more comfortable when the weather is hot.  It has more durability than the innerspring mattress and will repel dust mites.  Natural latex is also better for the planet as it is biodegradable.  If you have an allergy to latex this mattress most likely won’t work for you, however.  Make sure that you have a bed frame that has slats so that no mould grows on the underside.

Our last comparison is the Air Mattress.  A cushion of air supports the sleeper and can be tailored to the degree of firmness for each person. It is a chilling experience in the colder months as the bed doesn’t hold any heat.  This type of bed gets mostly positive reviews, but some did find it lumpy with a trench between air chambers.

There are many price differences because of the material used to make the frame.  The standard metal frame bed will be the least costly of all the types.  It is strictly no frills.  Wooden best bed frames can be made from hardwoods like oak or a softer pine.  These bed frames can be painted or stained to match any décor.  The wooden bed frames can have slats that allow air to circulate or a solid bottom to lay the mattress on.

If the best bed frame is made of wood you will have many styles to choose from.  There are sleigh beds, solid wood head and foot board bed frames and children’s styles that may have cut outs.   Wooden bed frames can also be designed to look like cars, machinery, or have decals.  They can be intricately carved with massive posts at all four corners or an overhead canopy.

There are styles that are very simple like the Shaker bed frames or minimalistic, clean lines of modern or Swedish designs.  For everyone’s taste there are best beds to fit your personality and pocketbook.

Best beds can also have more than one task to perform.  Take the Divan best bed; it incorporates a storage area under the mattress and box springs.  You can have one big storage area or it can be divided into drawers.  This type of best bed allows for less furniture in a small bedroom as there is no need for a chest of drawers.

Another best bed that works double duty is one where there is a second mattress stored underneath the top bed.  These beds pull out from under the top bed and can be unlatched so they are parallel with the first bed.  You can also find a bed frame such as this, but it is in a drawer so it remains closer to the floor.  These work great for guests or in a child’s room for sleepovers.

The last type of best bed frames are for futons.  They usually contain a full size futon bed cushion.  They also work well in a small flat or form room.  The futon doubles as a couch during the day and a bed at night.  The best bed frames come in painted metal with flat or rounded arms.  A classier look in the futon best bed frame has fabric covered arms just like a sofa.
