Bed frames (sometimes also known as Bedsteads) have made a comeback in popularity over the past few years; this combined with the new modern technologies has produced some fantastic and unique bed frames. Most bedsteads or bed frames are made from metal (usually steel and iron), wood or plastic, or sometimes a combination of these.
The standard system used to support a mattress is the use of wooden slats. In the lower end of the bedsteads market, these slats are usually rigid and fixed and have a bigger distance between each slat, while in the higher end of the bedsteads market; they usually have small springs attached to give the bed frames a softer feel. It is advisable for the gap between each slat to be no larger than 10cm; this will reduce the effects of wear and tear dramatically.
Another system in use on bedsteads is the use of wire mesh, instead of wooden slats.
Bed Frames are commonly made from several main parts:
The Headboard – these parts of bed frames are primarily used to hold the bed clothes in place and to help support the side rails.
The Side Rails – these are used to support the base, usually slats or a mesh base. They connect to the headboard and footboard.
The Footboard – this had almost the same use as the headboard
The Base – this is used to support the mattress.
